A black crust speckles the soil and fine gravel at the edge of a trail.

First photo: Dry crust on the left, partially rehydrated crust on the right.

Second photo: the crust in place on the soil.

Third photo: The crust is along the trail edge to the left of my boot.

Last photo: Rehydrating the crust in a palmful of water.

This towering tree will shade the natural pool in a city park when it leafs out. The trunk is at least 12 feel in circumference.

Based on its size and creekside habitat, I thought it might be a cottonwood but the flowers don’t seem right. Maybe an elm??
