redstem monkeyflower, Erythranthe rubella, California, White Mountains, Marble Creek, Benton Valley - Owens Valley watershed, elevation 1626 m (5335 ft).

When I saw this carpeting the alluvial fan of Marble Creek, especially under the shrub canopies, it reminded me of how Erythranthe suksdorfii often occurs farther north in the Great Basin in wet years.

But to my surprise, these had the larger flowers, longer internodes, and corolla markings of Erythranthe rubella instead, which I had previously seen only on rocky slopes and outcrops, not carpeting the desert floor! Perhaps speaks to the very unusual and abundant rain year leading up to this observation.
