New addition to the White Mountains flora discovered this year by Tim Forsell of the White Mountain Research Center. Thank you Tim for guiding me back to it!

The species was growing in the vicinity of old historic small-scale mining habitations, and was possibly introduced to the White Mountains by that activity. It is native to the general region, however, and is definitely at least naturalized here at this point.

Siberian elm, Ulmus pumila, California, White Mountains, Westgard Pass, Owens Valley watershed, elevation 2109 m (6920 ft).

This non-native individual is a long-established volunteer at this site, likely from fruits blown up the canyon from other trees at Batchelder Spring a couple of miles below, and probably hanging on at this site due to the combination of roadside runoff and being in a natural drainage confluence.

Shorter plant in foreground. The taller plants in the background are Lupinus flavoculatus for comparison. Both were growing together in abundance at this site, and are sometimes confused with each other.
