What a great day trip to Houston! I was led by botanical guru (and City Nature Challenge species dominator!) Andy Newman -- the mission: find as many species as possible. I wish I would have taken some better photos...

The first stop was to Mercer Botanic Gardens. They have an odd practice of dumping plants close to the river, and there are some weird escapees that become established...

The second stop was this incredible right of way that connected with the Spring Creek Parkway Trail. Two distinct habitats led to some really neat and unique flora! Of course, Andy showed us some grasses and sedges that I didn’t document very well (should have taken more time with each of these observations). This just means that I’ll have to visit this area again! :)

What a great day trip to Houston! I was led by botanical guru (and City Nature Challenge species dominator!) Andy Newman -- the mission: find as many species as possible. I wish I would have taken some better photos...

Third spot on the list was this really amazing park – Lake Houston Wilderness Park. Andy has some good connections here, so we were able to go to some really cool spots a bit off the beaten path. We spent time going through some wet woody areas and visited a cool lake on the southern part of the park too. Awesome place!

What a great day trip to Houston! I was led by botanical guru (and City Nature Challenge species dominator!) Andy Newman -- the mission: find as many species as possible. I wish I would have taken some better photos...

This final stop for the day was roadside to see some Rayjacksonia aurea and Chloris texensis in a really unique barren. Lots of other cool plants were spotted here too. Hopefully the invasive grasses don’t completely take these areas over…
