Gary Perlmutter (Herbarium Associate with the North Carolina Botanical Garden, Chapel Hill) was intrigued when I pointed out these Dermiscellum oulocheilum growing on top of, or amongst perhaps, the Rinodina (?) species. Gary encourage me to take a photo to document the occurrence. Whilst reviewing the photos at home, I noticed the coffee-brown tiny rosette lichen (to the right of the white Dermiscellum) for which I will have to make a separate observation [https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/164063291].

The lichen of interest is the teensy weensy coffee-brown, rosette-forming species (center, and periphery of photo), with adnate lobes that have a slightly lighter color near the tips of the lobes.
Although I was accompanied by Gary Perlmutter, Herbarium Associate with the North Carolina Botanical Garden Chapel Hill, I do not think either of us noticed this brown lichen whilst in the field. That happened later when I reviewed my photos of the Dermiscellum oulocheilum population growing atop another lichen (Rinodina milvina (?)). So, any misidentification is (as ever) mine.

On bedrock in the channel of the Haw River, and at a position/height that is inundated for many months of the year.
Immediately to the right, in the photo, is the water of the river, beneath which more individuals of this lichen reside on rock that is probably perpetually below the water's surface [A separate observation will be made for these submerged individuals, and a link posted here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/163523814].
3rd photo shows thallus color in the hydrated condition (doused with river water).
4th photo shows the lichen, and to the right the submerged rock with more individuals that likely exceedingly rarely experience desiccation/are normally perpetually submerged.

At one time, in my garden, an Agave schidigera 'Durango Delight' flowered, and onto its flowers I placed pollen of Agave lophantha, the pollen donated by Juniper Level Botanic Garden. The resultant seed I gave to Juniper Level Botanic Garden, of which this is their best seedling. They have named it 'Wheel of Fortune'. It is perfectly cold hardy in USDA climate Zone 7. Another dream come true.

This Black oak, which had been mostly dead, looks to have been uprooted during the heavy rains this weekend. The first photo shows the bud from what I think is the tallest point on the tree. Acorns and flowers, both male and female, are shown, as well.

The same dramatic thallus color change from desiccated to hydrated condition as Phaeophyscia ciliata, but lacking the tell-tale wreath of cilia below the apothecia.
