Any of you moth-ers out there know that these early spring daytime fliers can be difficult to photograph -- they seldom land, and when they do, it's often high. There were taken when it landed in a treetop using a 400mm lens.

This moth was in my office - on a winter morning (Jan 7).
A few weeks earlier, I had brought two large outdoor planters inside for the winter... so my hypothesis is that it was accidentally brought in one of those, likely as either a larva or puppa, with the warmth causing eclosion.

I only noticed the one ant on my finger at first while I was captivated by the pink female broom crowberry flowers (observed separately), then found a single stem crawling with them, and then spotted the huge mound. I was relieved to realize at this point I had luckily avoided, in my utter absorption in photographing everything else, placing any tender body parts in the way of their mound construction project! It was neat to see how they used the crowberry blossoms for food and their needles for building the mound.

While walking in the Herring Cove Provincial Park Reserve, along the coast, between granite outcrops in the coastal barrens, I found these two twigs on the same plant.

To me, the smaller one is clearly creeping juniper. The larger twig looks different, and further on the trail, there were many places where both forms were growing on the same plant. The scaly form was more frequent, the spiny form restricted to locations where the twig was less exposed (between other plants, off the barren granite).

Any comments/info appreciated.

This jack can be distinguished from the pilot fish by the presence of a first dorsal fin. Juveniles are banded vertically like pilotfish, and follow large objects or animals. Large individuals (over 10 inches) have no bands & look like the Lesser Amberjack.

Attracted to light at my house surrounded by shrubs, old field habitat and mixed forest, including Red Oak.

Introduced from Europe to Massachusetts in 1897; quickly widened its range throughout New England and eastern Canada but then declined to a remnant population on Cape Cod and coastal islands in Maine (info from BugGuide).

Pohl et als (2018) list it as extinct from Canada since the 1940's.

I have been told that populations in Maine have increased in recent years so this species may be expanding again. Seems to be considered a potential major pest of hardwood forests as well as of human health concerns for those coming in contact with the caterpillar!
