I was given this "whitefish" and told generally where it was caught by net. That is the location I have marked. Debated whether or not to post it, as I did not technically observe in nature, but I am interested in the specific species ID. Other things to note are that the stomach was full of snails. I am thinking either a larger Bering Cisco or a smaller Humpback Whitefish. I regret not taking better pictures before eating. It was delicious white flesh, but I think that's true of all whitefish.

Write up from Flickr when we initially found the animal:

We were driving west on alligator alley this morning with our friend Randy when I caught a quick glance of a roadkill in the middle of the road. I instantly thought it might have been an everglades mink (highly endangered). We kept driving and about 2 miles later we saw an animal running across the highway. We got a really good look at it and I am sure it was a live everglades mink (my second live mink, first was in Fakahatchee).

Randy turned around so we could go check out the roadkill I had seen a few miles back. It turned out to be an everglades mink also! I called Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park biologist Mike Owen to tell him . Mike said we would submit it to the University of Florida under his permit to collect roadkill.

According to Mike there are about 15 mink which have been collected over the past 80 years or so and send to the University.

I was siting on the shore of a reservoir in northern white pine/hemlock/red oak forest. This bee buzzed in close like yellowjackets often do. I started to slowly usher it away with my hand and it immediatly latched onto the knuckle of my middle finger and began a prolonged sting. I flipped off into the water, but retrieved it. It died of its injuries an hour later.

I’ve got a bit of a backlog of observations to upload, but I can’t not upload this one!

After a VERY long kayak trip from Balloch to Inchconachan, I spent about an hour and a half looking for the wild wallabies that live on the island. They were released in the 1940s and have had a stable population ever since, and I’d always wanted to see them (https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/wallabies-of-inchconnachan).

Well, with less than ten minutes before I would have had to reluctantly start the trip back, I saw one! It was bounding through the ferns higher up the island, along one of the tracks they seem to have. I followed it for a while, more listening to the telltale ‘bouncing through undergrowth’ sound than seeing it (they’re fast), and finally was able to get this photo. Well worth the trip!

While filming juvenile salmonids, discovered a writhing nest of spawning lamprey at the mouth of a small tributary adjacent to Brooks Lake, Katmai National Park & Preserve, Alaska Peninsula

The lamprey (approximately 10-12) were very active, both actively and passively moving sediment whilst gyrating in a fairly tight group. Although small in size, they appear to be Pacific, not Arctic Lamprey due to greenish dorsal coloration and lack of dark splotch on posterior dorsal fin and tail. River Lamprey (Lampetra ayresii) are not found in this region of Alaska. After review footage in slow motion, was still unable to determine species ID through pattern of teeth: three large teeth on the supraoral bar and three sharp points on each of the central lateral tooth plates.

While biking, I observed the lynx on the Valley of 10,000 Smokes Road in Katmai National Park & Preserve on the Alaska Peninsula in early morning. When the lynx saw me, it went approximately 25 yards off of the road into the forest where it lay observing me for roughly 10 minutes before it moved on. During this time, the lynx yawned multiple times and closed its eyes repeatedly, seeming to micro-nap. The lynx exhibited no visible or audible signs of stress and left the area slowly, looking back over its shoulder one time before moving out of sight.

Tentative id based on the large amount of grey underbelly, distinct transition from brown to grey, the short tail with distinctly darker tip, and the overall size (subjective, I did not get a measurement). Habitat = open spruce forest about 300 meters below treeline.

It was -5 F. Shrew was crossing the road and had to do some searching to find a soft spot where it could get back under the snow. I wonder if its extremities are red due to increased blood circulation to keep from freezing. Normal subnivean temp should be around 28 F.
