This is a regularly tapering tube made out of sand grains and hardened mucus, created by a polychaete in the family Pectinariidae.

The one is a little bit broken -- not really intact otherwise it would be longer and a bit more curved.

Stunned to see this tiny marvel in my favorite local dogbane patch around noon today. I saw a small blue fluttering over the flowers and assumed it was Cupido or Celastrina, but when it landed, I could see the bold ventral pattern and smaller size. The creature was very jittery, startled into the air frequently by the many wasps and bees and by my own movements. On the wing, it flashed clear, pale blue. I managed a couple of poor photos with my phone before it disappeared. I pulled out my DSLR and hunted the area for an hour or so but couldn’t find it again.

The ventral forewing pattern seems to match L. cassius, but apparently there is a “light” form of L. marina, which is a species believed to be a more frequent vagrant?

To me it seemed unlikely that this was either of the two more common species, as the leaves on this one are really huge, like 4 inches long.

But I really don't know how to ID the Hornbeam Copperleaf , especially considering this plant is not in flower or fruit.

So I could be completely wrong.

Could this just be a giant example of Common Copperleaf?

This louse was sitting on a leaf of a small plant growing out of the shady wall in Carl Schurz Park. I let it crawl onto my glove, photographed it and then made sure to put it back on the plant again.

It was a decent size, maybe about 3.5 mm, or possibly 4 mm?

I wonder what species of mammal or bird it had been living on?

A human???

A dog?

A pigeon?

I have no idea.

These are on the trunk of a Pin Oak street tree, which is also shown in the observation before this one.

These do not move at all. They are very tiny (2 mm or 2.5 mm) and they are a whitish cream in color. A vast number of them are attached to the tree trunk. Some of them have a hole in their surface.

Hard to see any detail at all. When I went back with a good hand lens I could see they were fibrous on the inside.

On flowers of Yucca filamentosa, our local yucca, but in this case planted in a garden, not wild. Same species though.

Insect larvae eating the petals of Yucca flowers.

I thought they were probably Yucca Moth caterpillars, but this article suggests (in the very last paragraph) that these petal-eating larvae may be beetle larvae instead?

https://uwm.edu/field-station/yucca-moth/

So, it is a bit of a mystery what these actually are, because the species in the Yucca Moth species complex supposedly don't eat the petals.

Some suggestions are beetle larvae or sawfly larvae....???

There is a weevil that attacks Yucca but it is also not supposed to eat the flower petals: Sycophorus yuccae.
