Anybody have information on this coat pattern? I know it’s a color morph, but just melanism?
Found in small stream with some rocks/rubble and silt, near bank in about 6 inches of slow flowing water, under some debris. The only other Etheostoma species known from this stream is Tessellated Darter, which is eliminated by head and mouth shape. Other close contender is Swamp Darter, which is not known from this stream, while Carolina Darter has been recorded here.
Photos are from another bird 2 km north on this trail where finally seen for first time ever.Very shy and secretive.Audio from this species without doubt,with diagnostic end laughter unlike Rhinoceros Hornbill.
