Gymnopus spongiosus
One of the Nicest Boletales I have found to date.
Pileus was 5+cm cross in diameter by maybe 3.5cm tall. The Stipe maybe 2-2.5cm wide by 7cm in length. I cannot recall the scent of it.
Scaly cap, white and slightly yellowing. Gills white and stalk same as cap. Stalk bruises a bright red, gills a slightly less vibrant red on crushing. Veil remnant present. Found near the spot where I previously saw this species. Spore print white, spores similar to those of C. molybdites but a little smaller.
Found in grass relatively close to Live Oak. White cap with prominent scales concentrated at the center. Gills free and close. Stalk flesh stains a distinct red color when bruised or cut. Stalk white, slender, with mature specimens having a distinct superior ring where partial veil was.
