A many stemmed shrub forming a thicket up to 2.8m high. Growing in sandy alluvium on a mostly dry part of the Blyde River floodplain.
Flowers(23/04/14) 4.5mm in diameter, on flower heads, about 40mm. Stigma with 2 lobes. From leaf axils, brachyblasts or on spines.
Leaves (up to 15x40mm) in clusters on brachyblasts and also single on spines.
Spines up to 70mm.
Very few fruit formed (12/05/14) considering the profusion of flowers. By 18/05/14 the fruit capsules (3.2mm dia. x 4.5mm long) were tinged with red. I expect the capsule is two lobed, but cannot see that.
The profusion of flowers attracted a variety of insects, mostly flies. Interactions to follow...
