Bioblitz Warren Woods with us!

Hey! You're tagged in this post because you've made iNat observations within a 30 mile radius of Warren Woods State Park within the past 2 years.

The Chicago Wilderness region is participating in the City Nature Challenge 2018 (www.citynaturechallenge.com). The CNC is a friendly competition between dozens of urban regions worldwide during the 96 hours between April 27-30th, 2018, to see who can make the most observations of nature, find the most species, and get the most people participating! Lots of events are going on that weekend in the region, including a mini bioblitz at Warren Woods State park on Saturday, April 28th from 10AM to 1PM (EDT). Join us on a ramble through Warren Woods as we document plants, animals, fungi, and other creatures.

Check out www.habitat2030.org/citynaturechallenge for a full listing of regional events during this year's City Nature Challenge.

Meeting location: https://goo.gl/maps/usSez5owpXQ2 at 10AM EDT on Saturday, April 28th.

Bioblitz Harms Woods with us!

Hey! You're tagged in this post because you've made at least 10 iNat observations within a 10 mile radius of Harms Woods Forest Preserve in Glenview, IL within the past year.

Lots of events are going on that weekend in the region, including a mini bioblitz at Harms Woods on Sunday, April 29th from 9AM to 12PM. Harms is a diverse oak woodland situated along the North Branch of the Chicago River. One of the best spots for spring wildflower sightings on the North Branch, you will be able to explore ephemeral ponds, the river floodplain, and the gentle rise of a glacial moraine. Harms is also a great place to spot spring migratory birds, especially warblers.

Meeting place: https://goo.gl/maps/zb5s1SfRqCy at 9AM on Sunday, April 29th
It is the Glenview Woods parking lot. The lot is small (carpool if you can!), but overflow parking can be found at the picnic grove parking lot to the south: https://goo.gl/maps/d9qz2UbZ4Wp You can then walk north up the trail along the east side of the river to meet up with the group.

Check out www.habitat2030.org/citynaturechallenge for a full listing of regional events during this year's City Nature Challenge.

Species to find!

Lists of species that were not found during the City Nature Challenge in 2017 in our area (which was defined as Cook County), but have been found between January and April at some point in the Chicago Wilderness Region. That is, we should be able to find and document these during the CNC this year:

Plants to Find
Fungi to Find
Insects to Find
Birds to Find
Reptiles and Amphibians to Find
Mammals to Find
Other Creatures to Find

You can fiddle around with this new "compare" tool here:

Dealing with low quality observations and inappropriate content on iNaturalist

As the City Nature Challenge 2018 is beginning to ramp up (Edit: and because iNat was recently chosen as Apple's App of the Day), you may have noticed a ton of new users on the site. You can see the increase happening at the stats page...which is great! But many new users don't know that iNaturalist is a valued resource used by land managers, researchers, organizations, etc. and treat it more like any other social media site. I'm certainly seeing a lot more flags coming in this morning than usual.

Use the Data Quality Assessment section below the observation to mark observations as captive/cultivated, not containing an organism at all, clearly incorrect location or date, etc.

Several people have helped prepare these common responses to inappropriate content & other frequent issues, which include:

  • Not an Organism/Test Observations
  • Observation of Human
  • Multiple Species in One Observation
  • Captive/Cultivated Organism (abundance of or not marked as such)
  • Copyrighted Images
  • Photo Far Away/Not Cropped/Unidentifiable
  • Missing Location
  • Imprecise Location
  • Private Location
  • Duplicate Observations
  • Bad Identifications (jokes or malicious IDing)

I'd recommend bookmarking that link! Do you have anything to add to that page? Let me know... or just add it if you're a curator.

If you see something inappropriate, you can always flag the offending content (ID, observation, comment, and/or photo). A curator or site staff can take a look and hopefully find a resolution. But if you can, try to use one of those canned type responses before flagging the content. I generally try to engage the user before sending a message to help@inaturalist.org. Some people do need to be suspended right away; check out the Community Guidelines.

Curators, I use these boilerplate responses to flags suuuper frequently. If anyone reading this has been on iNaturalist for a while and is interested in potentially being a curator to help resolve these types of issues, you can reach out to me or help@inaturalist.org directly after reading through the Curator Guide.

When in doubt or if something is extremely inappropriate and should be deleted immediately, you can always email help@inaturalist.org.

Get ready!

Starting tonight at midnight! Full details for all the City Nature Challenge: Chicago Wilderness Region events are here:

https://habitat2030.org/city-nature-challenge/

Several events have been added in the past few days. Participate on your own in your favorite nature spot or join one of the mini bioblitzes this weekend.

A couple tips for a long weekend of bioblitzing:

  • I know you guys already have iNaturalist downloaded, but if you're attending an event with iNat newbies, let them know they should download the app before the event.
  • Don't forget your extra camera, batteries, and/or portable phone charger.
  • Water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray, something for scale like a ruler or coin, what else?
  • It's perfectly ok to post observations that don't have a photo. Especially important for birding and frogging! Just add all the other information--what you saw or heard, when, and where.
  • Depending on your cell service and data plan, you may want to turn OFF auto-upload and upload the observations once you get back to wifi.
  • Similarly, you may want to turn off the “Suggest Species” feature (though it’s pretty cool).
  • Focus on wild organisms: if you do observe captive or planted things like pets, house plants, or garden plants, be sure to mark them as such.
  • Look in a variety of places! Turn logs and rocks over (always put them back into place), look up, down, explore different types of habitat.
  • Let your friends know they should check out iNaturalist.org when they get home since the website has much more info than the app.

Thanks for a great day bioblitzing at Warren Woods

Hi! cassi here. You can view all of our observations from our day at Warren Woods here:

https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/bioblitz-warren-woods-april-28th-2018

I know some folks are still uploading observations, but as of this post, we had 441 observations of 139 different species. Thanks to everyone for coming out! I hope you guys had fun. :) Some of my favorites were:

How about yours?

**due to "geoprivacy" surrounding rare species on iNaturalist, some of the rare, threatened, and endangered species' observations won't show up in the bioblitz results.
