National Moth Week, 11th annual, July 23-31, 2022

"National Moth Week celebrates the beauty, life cycles, and habitats of moths. “Moth-ers” of all ages and abilities are encouraged to learn about, observe, and document moths in their backyards, parks, and neighborhoods. National Moth Week is being held, worldwide, during the last full week of July. NMW offers everyone, everywhere a unique opportunity to become a Citizen Scientist and contribute scientific data about moths. Through partnerships with major online biological data depositories, NMW participants can help map moth distribution and provide needed information on other life history aspects around the globe."

This is the only public moth lighting event I found in the Bay Area; you need to register to attend:

July 29, 2022
8:30 pm - 11:55 pm
Monte Bello Preserve
Approximate Total Miles: 0
The 11th annual National Moth Week takes place during July 23-31. Join Docent Naturalists Debbi Brusco, Jack Owicki, Vivian Neou, Ray Curiel, and guest Eddie Dunbar, and discover nocturnal moths and other insects. You'll observe surprisingly beautiful and interesting critters attracted to a special light, photograph them if you like, and submit them as citizen scientists to iNaturalist or another moth week partner data repository. See www.nationalmothweek.org for additional information. Bring water/snacks, a flashlight, and your camera or phone. This activity takes place at the parking lot; participants will have the option to leave earlier than the scheduled end time. This easy activity is well suited for those needing a less physically challenging outing.
Where to Meet:
Meet at the preserve parking lot on Page Mill Road (across from Los Trancos Preserve), 7 miles west of I-280 or 1.5 miles east of Skyline Boulevard. Those traveling from I-280 on Page Mill Rd. should allow approximately 35 minutes travel time.

Anyone know of any other moth-lighting events? Anyone up to pick a spot and do some mothlighting this week?

@chyroptera I didn't know there were ANY events, so that one looks like fun (I signed up, thank you!). Usually I just set up my moth light wherever, if I'm camping etc.

@anudibranchmom Yay! I had signed up too--the Peninsula usually has way more arthropods day and night than dry/windy/big ag Livermore, so I want to see what is there!

I'm out of town but I often go to the one at Monte Bello. I've always wanted to organize a moth week thing in Mitchell Canyon or elsewhere on Mt. D, but it turns out intention is not enough!

@kueda Mitchell Canyon would be excellent! Doesn't have to be moth week....:O Have a blast while traveling & see a few moths too!
