Ethan L - Bugs and Insects in Montreal: Adaptations and Phylogeny

  1. Phylogeny of 1 Observation:

The Common Pill Woodlouse (armadillidium vulgare) falls under the phylogeny of armadillidium; there are 212 species under this genus. The Encyclopedia of Life summarizes armadillidium as a "...genus of isopods in the family of pill bugs. They are detritivores."

  1. Adaptation - All Observed Species

There are no clear/substantial adaptations that all of these species share! This is because the common ancestry of these organisms date further back than "Winged Insects" on OneZoom, of which there are nearly 1,000,000 different species beneath.

  1. Adaptation - Unique Adaptation

Perhaps its most famous characteristic, Pill bugs have developed the trait of rolling into a ball. While it is also meant to protect itself from predators, Pill bugs have acquired this adaptation in order to combat overheating; rolling into a ball protects any remining moisture on their gills.
