Not a great picture but I think this is a Lilac-bordered Copper. The range and habitat fit, there is a visible patch of color on the underwing plus they have a flight that can occur in October which is later than other coppers in the range according to my field guide.

My kids and I started the field work for our unofficial wolf survey.
No signs of wolf activity but we found fresh raccoon and bear tracks. We also saw Pileated Woodpeckers, Mountain Quail Allen's Chipmunks, and a couple of Sierran Tree Frogs.
