American Malacological Society and Western Society of Malacologists Joint Meeting in Honolulu June 19th-23rd

Hello everyone,

June 19-23, 2018 the 84th Annual American Malacological Society (AMS) and the 51st Annual Western Society of Malacologists (WSM) will hold a joint meeting in Honolulu, HI.

I am the president of WSM and am helping to coordinate the conference and a citizen science symposium. I know some of you are paid to do research on snails and their relatives and some of you are not, but we are all united in our use of iNaturalist to further understanding of mollusks.

I wanted to make sure that those of you who normally attend these meetings knew about them and I also wanted to make sure those of you who are new to the work of malacological research and societies knew your contributions in the citizen science section and any part of the meeting would be more than welcome.

Both of these societies have a long history of amateur involvement and often people come to the meetings to learn, not just present.

The venue for this year's meeting will be the beautiful Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel, bookended with the reception at the Waikiki Aquarium, and closing banquet at the Bishop Museum.

It sounds really lovely.

But for me, it would be a really expensive, and really tiring trip, because I live in far-away NYC, and because I will be 70 by then, and already my body hurts a lot of the time.

The meeting is happening about a month after I get back from four weeks in the West Indies. Sorry, much as I would love to be there in theory, in practice I won't make it.

@susanhewitt if I am still as active and sharp as you are at 70, I'll be mighty pleased! I'm not even either of those things as you are now!

Thanks @rebeccafay for the invitation as it does sound like an enjoyable time, but I am pretty locked down through this Summer. Maybe next time! --Jay

Wow, sounds exciting. I guess I need to start the begging process with my wife now.

Hi Rebecca
Thanks for the invitation! This conference is very close to my heart for several reasons: Hawaii is the place where my wife is from, where my kids were born, where my alma mater is (Univ. Hawaii at Manoa), and the banquet will be at my former workplace (Bishop Museum). Additionally, my late PhD advisor (Dr. E. Alison Kay) was the president of AMS (actually, it was AMU then) and hosted the AMS meeting last time it was held in Hawaii (1995, on the Big Island). I really enjoy the AMS meetings and have attended them as often as I can, including several joint meetings with WSM. Unfortunately, I'll teach during Summer I session, which is a semester crammed into only one month, so I can't participate. But please keep us posted, promote iNat, and encourage participants to join and contribute. If you need a project to post observations, I created one, Hawaiian Nature (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/hawaiian-nature), open to all wildlife of beautiful Hawaii.
Hope you have a successful and fun meeting!
Aloha, Fabio
