Found this snazzy bug crawling on the outside of the 2nd-floor window -- somehow got inside the screen (or perhaps it was hiding there when we took the air conditioner out). Despite the name, this species is now found coast to coast.

An itty bitty orbweaver web, spun across the ground in the lawn and highlighted by morning dew. For a size scale, those are grass seeds underneath.

View original on Flickr for video. Was thrilled to find several monarch caterpillars on my little Swamp Milkweed patch. This is actually the 1st time I have seen late-instar cats, though I have seen females ovipositing in previous years. This batch was growing sluggish, feeding only intermittently. By the next day some had already moved off to pupate. Thought about gathering them in, but didn't want to mess with Mother Nature -- I am not an expert rearer. They did a pretty good number on the milkweed -- the patch as a whole got off next to no seeds this year, despite plenty of water -- but that's what it's there for.

Found this big one in the corner of the moth sheet the next morning, chowing down on the bonanza of caddisflies.

6.0 mm, including wings. In the field I took it for a braconid or suchlike; wasn't till I saw the photos that I realized it was a fly. Turns out to be in an oddball family, the rust flies.

Had this thing at the moth light 2 days after tropical storm Isaias. Help needed; posted to BugGude, but no love yet. Resembles the taxon on BugGuide labeled unidentified genus / species A, https://bugguide.net/node/view/845381/bgpage (numerous dark spots on wings, checkered fringes). 2.6 mm head to tip of forewing.

Body length 22 mm. Same specimen as the shot against the sheet (www.flickr.com/photos/anitagould/50312497132/in/dateposted/), but different flash bounce, bringing out a lot more of the purple and brass highlights.

I assumed this guy, hiding behind the sheet, was the same individual as the Common Looper Moth seen earlier in the evening, but it turned out to be a different species, & a new one for me -- black spot on the fringe makes it a Soybean Looper.
