This was a weird one. Substrate: a pair of ankle socks left in the mud in a flooded abandoned limestone quarry. Hard to tell where the black cespitose mat lichen stops and the squamulous lichen starts. For the moment I'm focusing on the squamules. They are red-brown with a dark border when dry, 1.5 to 3.5 mm wide. Brownish cortex on top and bottom surface, much darker on the bottom. According to the literature for Psorula, at least, there may be some small black apothecia lurking nearby, but I haven't pursued that yet. Some of the images are of the thalli in various stages of wetting.

There were several species of Zygnema, I think, in the puddle on the floor of the abandoned limestone quarry. This one was most common.

Apologies for the bad images. I tried to get an image of the four flagella (1st gif) and forgot to record the cell itself. You can kind of glimpse the stigma in the cell to the side, as my attention wanders to the other tiny biflagellate in the 2nd gif. From a pond rife with Zygnema on the floor of the abandoned limestone quarry. 7.7 µm diameter.
