The 5 mm long beetle was a result of a rearing experiment using a segment of a larch trunk. The larch sample, about 1/2 meter long, was collected on December 1, 2023, placed in a plastic storage container, and several beetles emerged on December 21.
The project was prompted by the observation that many of the larch trees had peeling and unhealthy looking bark. Also, many woodpeckers were observed in the area.
The final photo shows the 36 beetles reared and collected from a section of the larch section 50 cm long and 10 cm in diameter. Each beetle is 4 to 5 mm long.

This deer mouse apparently was killed and cached by a northern shrike. It was discovered on December 8, 2023. It was about 5 feet above ground level in an area of highly mixed forest.
On December 19 it was still present and intact. That would seem to imply that shrikes have good hunting success in the area!
