Does not look like the New Zealand Mantis, quick research suggests it could possibly be a South African Praying Mantis (Miomantis caffra) due to its narrow thorax.
He could fly, so I assume its a male.

In the garden searching for different types of bees and wasps, I found this. At first glance I thought it could have been a very small/young wasp (due to similar colouring to wasps I had seen), but the way it moved suggested it was something else.
