As I took this picture feeling nuts fall on my head, I remembered a memory. I remember telling my mother excitedly that these little fellows were invasive and her promptly telling everyone else she could. Never once doubting me, just believing my words and loving me with all her heart.

Then one more nut hit me and I snapped out of it and ran to the library as fast as I could. It’s not good to be stuck in memories and definitely not around hungry squirrels.

I was waiting outside for an interview all dressed when I saw this on the ground. Someone ran away but I desperately moved forward trying to take whatever I can. Safe to say that when the interviewer saw me crouching on the floor (blazer and all) talking to the ground she must have thought I was insane. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t revel in it.

Off the side of the road near nowhere at all I got lost in the woods. My dog running ahead of me, I looked down took a breath and took a photo. I calmed myself down and turned back, knowing this plant to now be my landmark back to civilization

I used to work at a place where I would walk through piles of snails in the cement path. I would try and not get late because I would pick each snail up and put them safely on the grass, away from being stepped on and away from their stepped on friends. I just thought it would be nice if someone did that for me. Picked me up and put me off that dangerous path and placed me gently on the soft grass instead.

Ignore the paint on my hand. I was trying to make a painting of the nature around me, but I ended up adding people. I guess if I was I philosophy that would say something about me...why do we add people to paintings?

I picked it up and let it walk on my hand. It looked at me and gladly chose my palm as it’s home...I wanted to hold it forever and it looked like it wanted to stay. But I knew that there are precious moments, where two different beings just connect, and that if these are infinite then they would not be precious anymore. So I let it go and it turned to look at me and then went it’s way.

The hawk itself does not notice the small people on the makeshift tower. It doesn’t hear the screams of delight when we watch it soar. It simply is and all it knows is the feeling of air in its wings. A sensation so amazing, yet feels as natural as breathing to it. I wish I was born flying, but then I suppose I wouldn’t know what to do with the fall, or how good it feels on the top. Just some perspective I suppose.

Watch as a lone tree reaches for the light. Almost biblical if that catches your drift. I am taking a British literature course where my professor said, “to remove religion completely from a subject is to take out the heart of a piece”. Now I am not spiritual, but it is nice to look at nature with such soulful lenses...it allows those who see just green organism to see something, perhaps more divine?

I remember learning somewhere that most earthworms in Canada are invasive. However, we have adapted around them and now have incorporated them into our ecosystem, with mixed effects. Isn’t it strange? Perhaps the obstacle isn’t that hard to climb. Why climb at all? Maybe stare it down, be resilient (a key principle of biodiversity) and adapt.

Odd how through the rain flowers bloom, but as people we wither. Or take out our umbrellas. Or run inside. I think I would like to bloom through the rain and wait for the sun. Because won’t it look so beautiful after the storm.
