Growing up on a shady bank next to the Cobal Canyon Trail in the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park. I spotted them about two weeks ago, but I couldn't get close to them and didn't have my telephoto lens. Fortunately they were still blooming when I came back. You can get an idea of the difficulty photographing them from the habitat shot (last photo) – there are some there in the upper part of the photo, but they're really hard to see.

When first spotted, this rattlesnake was stretched out across the middle of the fire road, as shown in the second photo. It seemed to just be lying there quietly, so I thought I walk off the trail as far as could to pass by its tail end. But when I started to move closer, it coiled up and rattled. I decided this was a good day to go in a different direction!
