These have a very distinct smell that I immediately recognised. I haven't seen this species since I was a child. I remember playing with the seed capsules back then

Follow up from yesterday's observation. Observed four turtles in total today. Two seem to be much older and the other two probably still not reached adulthood. After phoning the local authorities, they confirmed that these turtles are not cultivated, but are released pets which are surviving and procreating all over Vienna. Legally, these invading species should be captured and given to the local authorities. However, it would be practically difficult to do so (as they explained to me). Thus, they are tolerated.

Red stripes at the eyes.
Not sure about the origin of the turtle: a) cultivated in the pond; b) a released pet; c) invader?
Also saw a second smaller one, but too far for a reasonable shot
