I am not positive which species of vole this is. Note the black tip of the short tail. Note coloration. (The yardstick that was located an inch or 2 directly over the vole is in inches.)

This was recorded in the early hours of the morning right as the night was ending and there was slight daylight. It seemed to be coming from the very edge of the lake. I have seen both Mallards and Canada geese the last 2 days since most of the ice on the lake has melted.

With the ice only recently having disappeared from this lake, these newts—and a fair number of their friends—were observed as exhibiting somewhat unusual behavior: coming out of the water at the lakes edge to air breathe and sun themselves. One pair I saw appeared to be mating underwater. They were apparently embarrassed such that they disentangle before I was able to snap their photo. :-)

This owl showed up this AM close to our bird feeder. As you can see, a gray squirrel walking behind did not get much attention from the owl ... a few minutes later when it was in a position when it could be more easily attached. Blue jays would fly to and land on the nearby feeder with abandon as there was little chance that the owl could get them either.

These tracks were observed in the morning in a large cornfield on a sunny but sub freezing day in which there was little wind after there had been a dusting of snow the previous night. The scale shown in the photos is in centimeters, thus making these footprints most likely belonging to some mouse species.
