Welcome to the Royal BC Museum iNaturalist profile!

About the museum:

The Royal BC Museum is one of Canada’s greatest cultural treasures. Through research and learning, we strive to broaden understanding about our province and inspire curiosity and wonder. We are passionate about sharing British Columbia’s story with the millions of visitors who walk through our doors and engage with us online each year.

We have over seven million objects and specimens in our care, and millions of government documents and records; substantial photographic, audio and video collections; artworks; and an extensive library of publications. Our natural history collections document the major taxonomic groups found in BC, helping to provide a foundation for biodiversity knowledge in the province.

The Royal BC Museum is located on the traditional territories of the Lekwungen (Songhees and Xwsepsum Nations). We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live and learn on this territory.

About this profile:

Since the museum was founded in 1886, British Columbians (and researchers from around the world) have sought our advice to identify species and help interpret their observations of the natural world. We proudly continue this tradition today with iNaturalist, which we welcome as a tool for citizen science, collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Please tag our profile (@RBCM) in your observations! Tag us even if you don’t require assistance identifying species: we would love to see and discuss what you’re discovering in the great outdoors. Many of our staff use iNaturalist data for their research, and we’re excited to give back to this wonderful online community.
