A transplant to California, I've fallen in love with the place and feel my roots grow deeper and wider with time. Hiking + native plants and ecosystems + photography is one of my favorite combinations, and because of applying that to iNat, I've started focusing on documenting plants (mainly, but everyone else too) in a fairly detailed way (well, as detailed as I can given the need to stop hiking and return to my day job...) I really enjoy being able to get up close and personal with plants, insects, fungi, and anyone else who will let me, the macro world is glorious, and reminds me that it's a fractal universe out there!
For work I'm a GIS analyst doing modeling of ecosystem services (which is a whole controversial concept in itself) and providing related information to decision-making around the world. While it does also involve spatial data (and provides the flexibility to get a short hike in many days), it almost exclusively involves sitting on my butt and staring at a screen, working in places I do not know and may never see, which I've learned is just not where I want to spend my time. I want to be out in nature, working around the mind-blowingly diverse place that is currently called California, to help document and restore the land that has been so terrorized by invasion, human overpopulation, capitalism and disconnection. So I'm working on a third career too. :-)
