I am a software engineer in the Des Moines, Iowa area.

In my spare time I enjoy learning about local species identification, horticulture, and photography. Most of the time I have no idea what I'm doing, but occasionally manage to stumble across something cool, post it here, and try to learn more. I also post some of my favorites on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jcook83/

I especially like exploring tiny things. It's been a lot of fun to discover tiny insects, spiders, fungi, and other organisms that I've been surrounded by but haven't really noticed before. I also like tiny plants, especially Haworthia and other succulent Asphodelaceae, and I grow and propagate some in a small indoor garden.

Also, to combine two of my hobbies, I occasionally work on software that makes use of iNaturalist data. I'm currently working on pyinaturalist, a python client for the iNaturalist APIs: https://github.com/niconoe/pyinaturalist As well as an application to organize photo collections using taxonomy data from iNaturalist (still very early in development): https://github.com/JWCook/naturtag
