I am a software engineer in the Des Moines, Iowa area.

In my spare time I enjoy learning about local species identification, horticulture, and photography. Most of the time I have no idea what I'm doing, but occasionally manage to stumble across something cool, post it here, and try to learn more. I also post some of my favorites on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jcook83/

I especially like exploring tiny things. It's been a lot of fun to discover tiny insects, spiders, fungi, and other organisms that I've been surrounded by but haven't really noticed before. Turns out tiny things are difficult to photograph, though, so I have some practicing to do.

I also like tiny plants, especially Haworthia and other succulent Asphodelaceae. Since South Africa isn't exactly next door, though, for now I just grow and propagate some in a small indoor garden.
