I'm a biologist by trade and a naturalist at heart, and while my profession and vocation are compatible, one doesn't necessarily imply the other. I'm a professor in the Biology Department and the Marine Program at Boston University. In my job, I get to spend a fair amount of time in the salt marshes of New England as well as the mangroves and reefs of Belize. My childhood was spent exploring meadows, forests, streams, and ponds in and around my hometown of Scranton, PA, where my speciality was catching and keeping snakes. I'm also an avid naturalistic gardener, so perhaps to the chagrin of my neighbors, my yard is gradually reverting to a wilder state, mainly as the lawn gives way to coneflowers, black eyed Susans, blackberry, and dogwood. I continue to carve out some space for fruit and vegetables.
