Wildlife photographer with a strong interest in knowing what it is that I photograph. Originally a birder for some 50 years but becoming increasingly interested in insects, especially bees and hoverflies. Before retiring in 2018 I was an oceanographic data manager at the British Oceanographic Data Centre for 37 years with a particular interest in the application of computer science to the management of biogeochemical data. Before starting at BODC I did a BSc in geology at Swansea and a PhD in experimental geochemistry jointly between Imperial/Chelsea colleges London and the Natural History Museum followed by a couple of short-term post-doctoral research assistantships.

Upon retirement I was awarded an emeritus research fellowship at the National Oceanography Centre and have been using this to support parameter semantic work (AI descriptions of what was measured for a measurement) in UK, European and global fora.
