Fall 2023 NRMBC Top Observers (Most Observations)

In an effort to recognize those people who are out on the landscape making the most observations, the top Observers will be documented. Hopefully, this will create a new category of environmental hero, and encourage more people to become familiar with the species they share the landscape with. The following rankings are based on screenshots taken late Sunday night, 9/25/23.

1) Top 3 Observers in each:
-County in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming (sorted alphabetically)
-Regional District (British Columbia)
-Division (Alberta)
-and then Yukon and Northwest Territory;
2) Top 10 in each state, and in the Canadian provinces;
3) Top 50 in the NRMBC.

Day 4 (of 4)

What an exciting day!

Teton County, WY and Division 6, Alberta (Calgary) kept their 1st and 2nd Place for Observations all day. But the 3rd-6th Places were fluid, with preliminary results not decided until the last couple hours.

The End off Day 4 screenshots show the preliminary results. Since Observations taken between 9/14-17/23 can still be uploaded until 9/24/23, the final results won't be published until 9/25/23. The places typically don't change. And the additional Observations usually come from those with cameras, both handheld and game cameras.

Again, the final results will be:
1) Environmental Engagement Index (Observers/population), sorted from high to low, and
2) Top Observers: Top 3 per jurisdiction; Top 10 per state/province; and Top 50 overall.

So, between now and 9/24/23:
1) Finish uploading your Observations, and, please
2) Help ID any Observations you can. Remember: If possible, Observations should achieve Research Grade status (genus and species). If yours don't and/or you see one that doesn't, try to determine what could have been done differently.

Ideally, the number of Observations should = the number of Species. They don't because of duplicates, and because Species may not be identified. This is why neither Observations nor Species is used to determine the "winners" (though, arguably, Species probably is a more important measure than Observers.

The "success" of these NRMBCs can be measured by:
1) More Observers participating, and
2) High percentage of Research Grade Observations.

Thanks for participating! There's lots of good data here (and with the previous NRMBCs). If you'd like to collaborate on a poster, article or paper, let me know: geogehrig@gmail.com.

Day 3 (of 4)

Final results for the 2022 Fall NRMBC:

OBSERVATIONS: 9,339
SPECIES: 1,989
OBSERVERS: 1,360

End of Day 3 for this year's 2023 Fall NRMBC:

OBSERVATIONS: 4,604
SPECIES: 1,361
OBSERVERS: 691

So, Day 4 of the 2023 Fall NRMBC (tomorrow) will have to be HUGE to compare to last year's participation.

Teton, WY extends its lead in Observations!

Day 2 (of 4)

Beautiful weather throughout the ecoregion, so there should be lots of Observations made.

You don't have to go far to find wild things. The City Nature Challenge, which the NRMBC is based on, focuses on urban biodiversity. If you do stick within urban confines, keep the City Biodiversity Index in mind.

https://citieswithnature.org/cbi-introduction/

Does your city promote biodiversity? How many of the "28 indicators that measure native biodiversity, ecosystem services provided by biodiversity, and governance and management of biodiversity based on guidelines and methodology provided in the Handbook on the Singapore Index on Cities’ Biodiversity" are addressed in the city comprehensive plan? Any? Is there a conservation plan measuring and supporting species, or is the focus solely on recreation?

One easy place to...potentially... make Observations are city parks. Are those spaces, say, pollinator friendly? Are...any...native plants present, or are they monocultures dosed with pesticides and herbicides? Consider supporting the idea of your city becoming a Bee City:
https://beecityusa.org

Also, if you have time, take a look at nurseries and rate them in terms of native plant selection, and whether they use pesticides on them before they are sold.

End of Day 1

Screenshots from the umbrella project for Observations, Species and Observers are now on the NRMBC Facebook Page:
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100083568962117

Impressions So Far
1) Observations: Go Teton County, WY! They were the winners of the 2023 Spring CNC/NRMBC...and clearly have caught the bioblitz bug!
2) Species: It's fascinating to see the changes in the numbers and types of species observed over the course of the seasons.
3) Observers: Who are the people out on the landscape making observations, and engaging with their ecosystems? In the end, Who will be in the Top 3 for their jurisdiction? In the Top 5 for their State (county), Regional District (British Columbia) and Division (Alberta)? In the Top 50 overall? A Thursday start day isn't really predictive of who will wind up with the most Observations. So, stay tuned!

Remember: For the purposes of determining the jurisdictional champ, it's the number of Observers / population. So, the Observer graphs can be a little misleading...

And They're Off...at 12:01A on Thursday 9/14

The last NRMBC of the year starts in mere hours! You can see the Observations get added in real time. All Observations made between 12:01A on Thursday 9/14/23, and 11:59P on Sunday 9/17/23, will count.

At the end of each of the 4 nights, I will upload screen shots of the Observations, Species and Observers to the NRMBC Facebook Page (I wish I could add the screen shots here, but it's not an option):
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100083568962117

At the end of the day on Sunday 9/17/23, I will post preliminary results both here, and on the Facebook Page, of both the EEI and Top Observers.

You will have until 11:59P on Sunday 9/24/23 to finishing uploading your Observations. Final results will be posted here, and on the Facebook Page, on Monday 9/25/23.

Don't forget to sign up to be an Organizer for the 2024 City Nature Challenge:

THIS IS IT!

It's what City Nature Challenge Organizers have been waiting for...an email about the 2024 City Nature Challenge. If you haven't organized a bioblitz before, here's your chance to learn from the pros.

Note: I'll be setting up the springtime 2024 City Nature Challenge/Northern Rocky Mountain Biodiversity Challenges in all 106 jurisdictions in the NRMBC soon. They will be there in the event that no one wants to organize. They will be there, too, if someone does want to organize, but would like someone else to set them up. I'll be happy to make those interested Admins of specific projects, and to help in any way I can.

Oh yeah: Just 1 week until the Fall RNMBC! :-)

Join the 2024 City Nature Challenge! Informational meetings.

Thank you for your interest in organizing your city for the 2024 City Nature Challenge! We're excited to (hopefully!) work with you. Here is some important information:

The 2024 City Nature Challenge dates are:
-April 26 - 29: making observations
-April 30 - May 5: time to get all observations uploaded & work on IDing
-May 6: results announced!

If you are a NEW organizer (you haven't organized a city for the CNC before), please attend one of our upcoming informational meetings. We’ll cover:

-What the City Nature Challenge is
-How the CNC is run/organized
-What being an organizer entails
-Guidelines you'll need to follow and milestones you'll need to complete
-Bring your questions for the Q&A at the end!

These meetings help you make an informed decision whether or not there is time and people-power to organize your city for the City Nature Challenge. We'll ask for a final decision by mid-November. All three meetings cover the same information so you only need to attend one. These NEW organizer meetings will be held:

-Tuesday, 19 September at 1pm PDT / 20:00 UTC
-Wednesday, 20 September at 8 AM PDT / 15:00 UTC
-Thursday, 21 September at 4pm PDT / 23:00 UTC

Note: these meetings will be in English. We will try to schedule a meeting in Spanish soon!

Please sign up for one of the meetings using this spreadsheet
[https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18eaHH21BRGW-jcFXgC-XxxcYgcvXzTOB5f9ufn-h-Vk/edit?usp=sharing]

When you sign up, be sure to scroll down and click an EMPTY cell under the "Name" column BEFORE you start typing. Links to the Zoom meeting and agenda will be e-mailed to you and added to the spreadsheet closer to the meeting dates.

We HIGHLY recommend attending one of these meetings if you're a new CNC organizer. If you cannot make any of the meetings, please sign up on the spreadsheet linked above to receive the recording of the meeting (to the right of Reunión en español).

RETURNING organizers do not need to attend these meetings – but please send this to anyone you know who is interested in being a new organizer. We'll hold a kickoff meeting for ALL organizers in late October - we look forward to talking with you then!

NEW organizers - if you have a question about this email or these meetings, please REPLY ALL so that all five of us receive your email.

Thank you and hope to see you soon!

Alison Young & Olivia VanDamme (California Academy of Sciences), Lila Higgins, Amy Jaecker-Jones, & Sam Tayag (Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County)
