This group includes about 25 middle school 4H STEM club members from Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford and Langlois, Oregon. The club meets once a month on a field trip to an outdoor site to meet with Natural Resource professionals who use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) skills in their job.
The purpose of this group is to photo document flora and fauna found during STEM club field trips, including the Elephant Bar estuary baseline study project. The 4H STEM Club plans to use this site to apply skills such as observation, data recording, using scienctific instruments, practice data collection procedures, technology applications to gather evidence of the sites current biological and physical condition. The club will be building up skills to conduct a forest assessment at Elephant Bar riparian forest on the Lower Rogue River.
Elephant Bar is private land being used for conservation with estuary and riparian wetland habitat. The Lower Rogue Watershed Council has recently received a grant to begin restoration activities in 2017. The STEM Club will practice using Forestry skills such as tree inventory and plant community assessment using transects and/or random plots at this site.
