Protected Bird Shuts Down High School Lacrosse & Football Field.

This type of bird usually nests in grassland areas, so the American River Parkway is perfect, but somehow she got confused and flew over the levee to this field to nest in artificial turf.

The protected bird is now literally protected not only by its mate but by an 80-foot perimeter for the next two weeks at least.

Monroe Ridge Trail.

In autumn, color returns and temperatures fall to make the walk enjoyable. A couple of picnic tables along the way were a welcome site in summer and oak trees provided needed shade. Ticks, snakes and poison oak are all possible threats. In October, warnings of mountain lion sightings were posted at the trail's ends.

The $8.9 Million California Water Bond That Has Environmentalists Divided.

The measure, Proposition 3, has divided the environmental community and drawn criticism from local newspapers, who say it would benefit wealthy farmers and agribusiness. From a San Francisco Chronicle editorial:

This scheme was devised as an initiative that is being funded, in part, by individuals and entities that are going to be receiving a share of the bond money. The pay-to-play aspect in itself should give voters ample reason to reject Prop. 3.
