Birds don’t fart, neither do sloths, and other secrets of #DoesItFart.

WHAT DOES A CREATURE NEED IN ORDER TO FART?

Ethan Kocak: Mostly a butthole.

Dani Rabaiotti: They need a hole at the opposite end to their mouths. That’s probably the main thing. It doesn’t have to be a butt, necessarily. There are all different sorts of ducts, cloacas — as long as it has some sort of hole at the opposite end to its head, where gas can come out.

Fire Management in California's Chaparral Harms Birds.

Now, for the first time, researchers investigating the effects of fire management practices on birds in California's chaparral have found that one practice, known as mastication, which consists of mechanically crushing vegetation to remove fuel, threatens bird communities.

Climate Change Threatens Bird Migrations, Habitats In San Diego County.

San Diego is a stopover point along the the Pacific Flyway migration path that stretches from South America to Alaska. It’s a crisscross this time of year, with winter flocks returning north and spring birds just arriving. More than 520 species have been documented in the county — the most in the nation, but that number is expected to decline in coming years as climate change takes hold.

When ospreys’ nest blows away, SCE gives them shelter.

During the early weeks of February, amateur photographer Chris Epting enjoyed documenting ospreys building their nest atop a power pole near his Huntington Harbour home. It was mating season, and the pair of lovebirds would be welcoming baby chicks in April.

But one morning, Epting noticed with alarm the nest had disappeared. He called Southern California Edison for information.

Migration forecasts could help prevent wind turbines and buildings from killing millions of birds.

Van Doren and Horton calculated the number of migratory birds on a massive scale. They analyzed radar images from 143 sites across the continental United States, examining the same half-hour period each night between March and May, the migration season. By looking at records from 1995 to 2017, they also were able to estimate for the first time the average number of birds migrating on any given night across the entire United States: about 200 million, they report on the preprint server bioRxiv. The mass movement peaks at 520 million birds, typically in early May.
