‘Floating balls’ will aim to deter birds from reservoir near airport.

The reservoir, which was completed in April 2017 and went into use in March, is generally not open to the public. If there are fish, there will be birds, which is a problem for the Redlands Municipal Airport less than a mile way. Birds and planes don’t mix.

Travel: Spotting a wildlife miracle in Pinnacles National Park.

I didn't know anything about Pinnacles National Park, except that it probably had pinnacles, when I visited the park during a trip to California last month.

So I certainly didn't suspect that my impromptu, 50-mile detour to the park, inspired by a highway sign, would give me a glimpse of a wildlife miracle, one I would have thought impossible just a few years ago.

Lake Lazarus: the strange rebirth of a Californian ecosystem.

Owens Lake in southern California was one of the largest inland bodies of water in the United States. By the mid-1920s, it was gone, drained to provide water to a mushrooming Los Angeles. Over the past 30 years, the city has spent around US$2 billion to undo the damage. It has failed to restore the lake, but in The Spoils of Dust, Alexander Robinson describes how the effort has succeeded in another way: by creating a landscape no less valuable ecologically. By documenting the transitions the lake has undergone, he suggests a way forward for engineers, geologists, ecologists and landscape designers hoping to bring other environments back from the brink.

Where are the Best Bay Area Birdwatching Spots for Fall and Winter?

The bay area is home to a bountiful bird population year round, thanks to our rich variety of habitat types and our strong commitment to protecting and restoring them. This month and next, however, bring exceptional opportunities for birdwatching, thanks to two factors: travelers, and tides.

Audubon Invites You to Join the 119th Annual Christmas Bird Count.

The Christmas Bird Count is one of the longest-running wildlife censuses in the world. Each individual count takes place in a 15-mile-wide circle and is led by a compiler responsible for organizing volunteers and submitting observations to Audubon. Within each circle, participants tally all birds seen or heard that day—not just the species but total numbers to provide a clear idea of the health of that particular population.

Napa Valley's Living Landscape: wild turkey talk.

The wild turkey was brought to California in the 1870s , then again in the 1920s, 1950s, and again in the 1970s. In the 1970s, the then-Department of Fish and Game brought in turkeys from Texas, the M.gallopavo intermedia.

Meet ospreys from New Melones.

The thousands of birds that populate the rolling hills of our foothill and Sierra landscapes never fail to fascinate us in their variety, habits and colors. Birdsongs and calls, like the warbles of red-wing blackbirds perched on fences in grasslands or the red-tailed hawks’ screeches as they loft high above a field fill the air and our lives with thrilling enjoyment, gifts nature bestows on us; all we have to do is listen to birds’ beautiful symphonies.
