Cedarberg Adventure

In 1968 Colin Inglis, then the Cape Western Divisional Commissioner, suggested an adventure event for 16 year-old 1st class scouts to encourage scouting.

A trial in 1969 featured 36 scouts hiking for 4 days in December in the Tafelberg, Northern Cedarberg and Southern Cedarberg areas, with a base camp at Sanddriff. The first actual Cedarberg Adventure was held in December 1970. Its success as a Western Cape event led to its becoming “The National Senior Scout Adventure,” open it to all scouts over 15 years and 1st Class, held every 2 years over 10 days. The first National event was held over New Year 1970/1971. Since then the adventure has become international with scouts from over 14 countries having participated to date.

Following declaration of the Cedarberg as a Wilderness area, in 1976 the Adventure was held in the Groot Winterhoek (with severe rains and flash floods, requiring helicopter rescues), and from 1978-83 in the Witzenberg Valley. In 1983 some 600 scouts participated. From 1985 the Cedarberg has again been the focus of the Adventure with bases held in private land adjacent the Wilderness area. In 2004 the Adventure established a permanent power supply, water source and camping site at Base Camp at Driehoek. And 2016 Adventure saw half of the Cedarberg burn - fortunately technological tracking of patrols allowed the area to be vacated timeously.

The 23st Adventure will be held in 2018.

The bases on the adventure are run by volunteer Scouters and outside experts (in Forestry, Geology, Fossil hunting, Archaeology, Astronomy, San Lore, Motor Engineering, Flying, Environmental Education and Conservation).

The Adventure programme provides unforgettable adventure and fun in the famous backpacking country of the Cedarberg Wilderness Area along rugged, rocky trails. Combining the best of advanced Scouting, fun and a real challenge, activities over the years have included water sports, rock climbing, the ultimate challenge game, underwater diving, sailing, electronics, archery, shooting, flying, pizzas, baking, and much more! All against the backdrop of the Wolfberg Cracks, Wolfberg Arch, Maltese Cross, Crystal Pools and Welbedacht Cave, including the high peaks of Tafelberg, Groot Krakadouw and Sneeuberg.

The Senior Scout adventure is a must for any senior Scout of 15 years or older, looking for high adventure and an outdoor challenge in a mountain wilderness area.
