A primary focus of Conservation Northwest’s work is to create the conditions necessary for native species to move between habitats and thrive once on the landscape. The Citizen Wildlife Monitoring Project gives us the tools and information to do just that by engaging volunteers directly in protecting the wildlife and wild places that make our region so extraordinary. This project is a powerful example of integrating citizen science, public education, and agency communication in a whole-systems approach that ultimately affects state and federal policy and management.
We have three primary goals:
1) Documenting species presence and location to inform land and resource management agencies, with a strategic focus on wildlife corridors and rare wildlife species
2) Offering opportunities for local residents to contribute to ongoing research, putting a face to Washington’s natural landscapes and wildlife
3) Educating citizens across Washington about our rare and endangered wildlife species and their associated habitats.
