How To Participate

You can participate in the challenge using the iNaturalist app or through the iNaturalist website.

Using the app:

  1. Tap "Make An Observation," then choose a medium; you can upload pictures or videos from your phone, or take a new photo or sound recording
  2. Once you have a clear photo/audio, click "Next"; you can use multiple photos/recordings per observation
*Do not submit multiple photos/audios of the same thing as separate observations

  3. The app will automatically fill in the date and time; if the information is incorrect, you can manually enter it
  4. Tap "What Did You See" to get auto-generated suggestions or manually enter in what you observed
*If you are not completely sure of what you observed, use the app's suggestions
*The app will suggest a genus and then several different species; if you are not sure of the species, use
    the genus suggestion

  5. The app will automatically fill in the location if your settings allow iNaturalist to view your location; if you do not have service, do not immediately submit your observation, or do not give iNaturalist permission to view your location, you can manually input the location of your observation
*You have the ability to change your location visibility; if you would not like your location to be public,
choose to OBSCURE your location; setting your location to private will prevent you from participating
    in the challenge
*Your location will automatically be obscured if what you observed is an endangered or rare species

  6. Tap "Yes/No" (iPhone) or tap the check mark (Android) if your observation is captive (i.e. a pet) or cultivated (i.e. a houseplant); while captive/cultivated observations are good for practice, focus on making wild observations for the challenge
  7. Tap "Save" (iPhone) or the check mark at the bottom (Android) to submit your observation

Using the website:
You can participate even without a phone! Upload your photos to your computer and use the desktop version of iNaturalist.

  1. Once you log in to your account, click "Upload" in the top right corner
  2. Click "Choose Files" to upload photos or audios from your computer; you can upload multiple files per one observation, so feel free to get multiple angles or shots of your observation!
*Do not submit multiple photos/audios of the same thing as separate observations

  3. Click the "Species Name" bar to load the auto-generated suggestions or manually type the species
*If you are not completely sure of what you observed, use the iNaturalist suggestions
*iNaturalist will suggest a genus and then several different species; if you are not sure of the species,
    use the genus suggestion

  4. If your camera geo-tags your photos, the location and date will automatically fill in. If not, manually enter in where and when you took the photo.
*You have the ability to change your location visibility; if you would not like your location to be public,
choose to OBSCURE your location; setting your location to private will prevent you from participating
    in the challenge
*Your location will automatically be obscured if what you observed is an endangered or rare species

  5. Check the box in the left-hand bar if your observation is captive (i.e. a pet) or cultivated (i.e. a houseplant); while captive/cultivated observations are good for practice, focus on making wild observations for the challenge
  6. Click "Submit Observation" in the top right corner; you can select multiple observations at once and submit them at the same time, or submit each of your observations individually
