Announcing the 2021 City Nature Challenge - 23 Canadian cities registered to participate!

In 2021, due to COVID the global City Nature Challenge (CNC) event will be less of an international competition and more of a collaborative effort to highlight biodiversity around the world in urban areas.

Over 500 cities from more than 40 countries are registered to participate in this year’s event, which encourages use of the free iNaturalist app to track species observations that become part of an international database of biodiversity. The event will run in two parts: recording observations from April 30th to May 3rd and identifying observations April 30th through May 9th.

In Canada, 23 cities are currently registered to participate in the 2021 event. A coalition of the local Canadian organizers wishes to challenge all Canadians to get outdoors, explore, observe nature, share observations (using iNat of course), and have fun (while following all local COVID restrictions).

It is our hope that in 2021 bubbles of university students will participate in full force. To add a little competition between student bodies several local CNC organizers plan to issue a challenge to universities in their areas. Hopefully students will challenge other students. The expectation is that local students will make a valuable/visible impact during the 4-day event!
