Presenter Pat Merkord has been Executive Director of the Native Prairies Association of Texas since 2013. This Association is a non-profit land trust that conserves, restores and educates about Texas prairies. This program will discuss the various ways that landowners can take advantage of conservation options to manage their land for preservation of wildlife habitat and to provide tax relief. Prairie restoration, landscaping for pollinators and birds are just some of the techniques that can be used to provide habitat for wildlife and provide relief from property taxes. This program will also provide information on Conservation Easements, what they are, what the requirements are, and the many benefits of Conservation Easements including income tax and property tax relief as well as inheritance tax benefits.

Pat, an Austin native currently living in Conroe, Texas with her husband Glenn, earned Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Biology from Texas A&M Kingsville and Texas State University respectively. After retiring from teaching biology and chemistry, Pat started a biological consulting business, Bluestem Environmental Consultants. She enjoys birding, gardening with natives, and traveling around the state visiting with landowners, working to restore and conserve prairie habitats, and educating about Texas native prairies.
