Ontario Moth Atlas updated with 2018 observations

I want to let everyone know about a massive update of the Ontario Moth Atlas. Almost 10,000 records were added to the maps recently, and the Atlas now has over 34,000 records online from six families. The increase in observations provides a much better picture of geographic distribution of many species, as well as allowing us to present detailed data on the seasonality for each species.

If you are interested in the source of the records, iNaturalist observations are the largest component of the maps, with approximately 40% of the records coming from iNat. Museum records represent approximately 20% of the data, and they contribute an important historical perspective to the Atlas. The Canadian National Collection of Insects, Arachnids, and Nematodes (CNC) and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) are the major sources, but we have found Ontario moth records in 20 different institutions globally. Various individuals have also contributed extensive personal records, and their lists represent almost 25% of the Atlas data. Other sources include TEA Seasonal Summary records, BAMONA and BOLD.

Thanks to all of you for the amazing photos, and the cooperative spirit on providing identifications. Behind the scenes, Ross Dickson and Ross Layberry have devoted considerable time to improving the quality of the data.
