Diario del proyecto Portland NPSO May 2022 Wildflower BioBlitz!

May is over, bring on the Sun, but not the Heat!

Despite the cooler temperatures, we logged hundreds of beautiful wildflower observations. I am hoping that everyone was motivated to explore areas that they hadn't been before. I started the month in familiar territory along the Columbia River upstream near Carson, and ended it further downstream, near St. Helens, at a new amazing Oak/Viburnum habitat.

Please remember to help our Project members by adding your Identifications, in order for the observations to count as Research Grade. It is so easy to do on your phone. Skip the ones you aren't sure of, and show your knowledge of those you are familiar with.

Friday, May 27th

The month, and with it the May 2022 Wildflower BioBlitz, is winding to a close. As of Friday evening 769 observers have made 3288 observations and 402 species. Tomorrow's weather forecast is not conducive to getting out, but what surprises will the last few days provide?

April showers did in fact bring May flowers.

Welcome to our Native Plant Society of Oregon and Portland’s blooming BioBlitz for May. Look around you for blossoms galore. I know that I am finding many are later this year, it will be interesting to compare the findings to last years BioBlitz results.

So far, though, it looks like camas are winning the popularity contest again, as well they should. A note on identification between the Common quamash and the Great leichtlinii reiterated by one of NPSO’s top wetland botanists. The qua-mash corolla is bi-symmetrical, and the leichtlinii is symmetrical. See if you can find examples of each. Also please help others get their observations included in the project by identifying them so that they can be considered Research grade.
