Tuesday, 2:30 PM

The early sunlight was a ruse - the temperature dropped throughout the day, and the wind picked up as the clouds moved in. Rain is in the offing.

Still, we have folks out collecting data! I headed to Round Pond and picked up a lot of mosses and lichens, and even a few moths. Heard my first black-throated green warbler of the season, too. But did not see or hear the sandhill cranes that are supposedly nesting there. If you head that way and can get them, awesome!

We a...

22 Aprile 24

Let's share the acknowledgement of pollinators

Pollinators serve as mutualistic partners in complex ecological networks with plants. These interactions serve as essential fundamental components to terrestrial ecosystem functioning by regulating wild plant reproduction, maintaining plant diversity, forming habitat and community dynamics, providing food for other wildlife, and by influencing the dispersal of species throughout landscapes. We can even be thankful to the ground nesters for their role in bioturbation and bringing nitrogen ...

City Nature Challenge Day 2

Good Luck everyone this weekend! Day 1 has some flurries in the morning and it was a bit cold on the hands trying to navigate the cameras. We are doing well so far in terms of observations (~2300 at the time of this post). I feel optimistic that we could get close to the 10K mark this weekend but it's always a soft guess as I have no idea how many people are sitting on un-uploaded observations. Do you have a strategy for uploading your observations or just get em up when you can? During ...

Hope all going well

Please make sure when you upload to group photos of the same sighting in one observation.
Remember, if you accidentally upload multiple observations of the same species, taken at the same place and time it will skew the data.

Happy snapping.

Highlights from Day 1 (April 26)

We're off to a great start to this year's City Nature Challenge in San Diego County.

On the first day, we had over 1000 species observed and nearly 3500 observations.

We're lucky to live in such a biodiverse part of the world, where there are opportunities to see something fascinating wherever we are in the county!

One of our top marine observers, @tidepooltales, submitted...

End of April

2023 had our most ever April observations (367), counties (46), and species (20).

So far for 2024, we now have the most observations (420+) and the most counties (50+ so far). We're just short on species (19). Still waiting on Southern Spreadwing, Painted Skimmer, Blue Dasher, Skimming Bluet, Red Saddlebags, and Lancet Clubtail - these have all April records in the last three years.

Our final April days include warm weather and and a weekend - both good signs for submissi...

April 28th - Diptera Leafminer Annotations

Heyo, fly folk!

We will NOT be having an organized Zoom workshop tonight, but the meeting room will be open if anyone wants to join (so long as Erika doesn't need her account; I won't be there).

My goal for you all this week is to help fix the Evidence of Presence for at least 15 of these observations:

Kestrel's everyday lives #9

We have an intruder alert!

The male kestrel flies (or runs, if you prefer) out of the nest because a few jackdaws landed thoughtlessly just five meters away. Not only did they land, but they also started an unplanned squawk that echoed throughout the area. With the female nearby, it's time to demonstrate vigilance, strength, and quick response!

Invasive species are a threat to blueberries and bird vetch is an invasive one that can invade undisturbed areas that most other invasive species do not (Rader). Do not use a rake of any kind to harvest the blueberries, it may be swifter, but you invariably damage the plant and can reduce the harvest of next year as the berry buds can start forming as early as late June for the Vaccinium uliginosum L. (Rader). Bees help improve pollination and fruit production from blueberry bushes (Rade...
