On Saturday, April 25, I travelled to one of my all-time favorite birding locations in my hometown, Caratunk Wildlife Refuge. This natural area is actually owned and run by Audubon Rhode Island, and it is home to a wide variety of both resident and migratory bird species. I arrived at the refuge at about 8 o’clock in the morning, and I finished logging my observations at around 10 o’clock. The weather was a beautiful 50˚, with little to no wind and barely any cloud cover. The ground was wet from a heavy rainstorm that happened the night before. As for the habitat, there is a mix between fielded habitat and wooded area, with a small pond as well. It could also be described as an edge habitat. This provided me with an opportunity to see bird species that prefer forested areas, fields, and ponds.
Two individuals were spotted together on the ground near a wooded area.
Two individuals were both spotted and heard from high up in a tree.
One Eastern Bluebird was observed sitting on top of a small bird house in a field.
Many individuals were observed flying above a large field, in and out of bird houses as well.
One Purple Martin was seen sticking its head out of a bird house.
The Northern Flicker was heard from afar.
Two Downy Woodpeckers were spotted on the side of a large tree before flying away.
One individual was first heard giving its characteristic "peter peter" call, before it was spotted in the branches of a tree.
A White-breasted Nuthatch was seen scaling the side of a tree after hearing its "nasally yank" call.
The Pine Warbler was heard giving its trill sound before it was spotted in some shrubbery in a forested area.
The individual was heard in a wooded area both calling and pecking.
Two individuals were spotted fluttering among some shrubbery in the woods.
Three individuals were spotted in a partially wooded area, along with being very vocal with their characteristic "drink your tea" call.
Two Mallards were observed swimming around in a small pond and often diving in to eat.
One Canada Goose was seen swimming around and being vocal on the pond.
The American Kestrel was spotted high up in a tree across a large field.
A Red-tailed Hawk was observed soaring overhead.
