Awhile back, I posted a series of photos showing the flowering stages of Zostera.
iNaturalist recently added annotations for Flowers & Fruits.
My goal is to demonstrate the proper use of "flowers & seeds" annotations for Zostera marina & Zostera noltii:
Stage 0: Early spathe developing annotated as "Flower Buds";
Stage 0: Developing stigmata visible through overlapping membranes but remaining within the spathe. Annotate as "Flower Buds"
Stage 1: Female flowering begins when the first stigmata are outside the spathe. Annotate as "Flowers" and specify "Sex: Female"
Stage 2 is very short in duration and is distinguished from Stage 0 by the absence of stigmata nestled above the swelling theca sacs or by the brown tips of a style once the stigmata have detached. Annotate as "Flower Buds" as this short duration stage is difficult to tell apart from stage 0 by visual observation without dissection.
Stage 3: Male flowering as pollen is released. Annotate with "Flowers" and "Sex:Male"
Stage 4: Seeds developing. Annotate as "Fruits or Seeds"
Stage 5: Seeds ready for dissemination. Annotate as "Fruits or Seeds"
Stage 6: Some seeds have been released but flowering shoot remains attached or upright. Annotate as "Fruits or Seeds"
