1 Year on iNaturalist

Yesterday, 1 May 2022, marked my first year on iNaturalist, and I've enjoyed everything I've done and learned so far. I first joined iNaturalist on 1 May 2021 for the City Nature Challenge, after I saw a post by the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, WA about the City Nature Challenge, and I thought it would be an interesting thing to try and that I might enjoy it (which I did). In the past year, I've learned so much more than I would've ever though I would have when I first joined. I also didn't think that I'd end up starting to identify other people's observation as well.

First Observation

The first observation I uploaded was a Pacific Banana Slug (naturally) from Wildwood Park in Puyallup, WA that I took pictures of on 24 June 2021. The first observation where I took new pictures specifically to upload (rather than uploading older pictures of mine) was a Bigleaf Maple I observed at 11:35 on 1 May 2021, the day I joined, and uploaded 4 minutes later.

Identifications

As for identifications, just yesterday I just hit the milestone of 1,000 identifications for others. My focus for identifying has mainly been plants in western Washington & Oregon. Of course, I've made more than my share of mistakes and errors in the past, but I try to take the opportunity to learn from them.

In this years City Nature Challenge for the Seattle-Tacoma Metro Area, I'm currently sitting at 4th place for the top identifiers, and I want to try to stay in the top 5 by the time the end of the identifying/uploading period.

Goals

By end of day 1 May 2023, I want to try to get to:

• 1,000 observations
• 2,500 identifications
• 275 species

I also want to learn more about and identify a wider variety of plants, especially those present in the Pacific Northwest. I also want to get better at getting more precise identifications on a lot of my own observations as I upload, because currently at lot just get left at plants or dicots when I upload them.
