@reinderw, @joepb, I'd like to invite you to join our project. We could really use your expertise. There are many misidentifications of this genus in California, which throw off the iNaturalist computer vision (CV) algorithm to the point where it usually suggests Malva parviflora for virtually all Malva observations.
