Invasion of the Red Admirals?

The early spring butterflies are starting to show up in numbers and in addition to the usual suspects - Mourning Cloaks, Eastern Commas, Compton Tortoiseshells etc - we are seeing an early influx of Red Admirals. Royce Bitzer (@iowabiologist) published this post discussing the wave of Red Admirals moving across North America on Thursday.

Sure enough, there was an observation in Windsor on Friday, then numerous observations yesterday from Backus Woods in Norfolk. Then they crossed the Niagara Escarpment and showed up in Brampton, Oakville, the Humber Valley and Pickering.

Yesterday, I saw at least 20 reports of Red Admiral, on iNat, eB and BAMONA, from all over Ontario, including one from KIngston and one from Ottawa

Hello All,

I had 10-15 yesterday at Point Pelee (15km round-trip bike ride though the trails). I was at Point Pelee back in 2012 when they were obviously everywhere. I had similar thoughts of an upcoming irruption (...or not). I even had one fly by my back porch (in Windsor) yesterday as well.

Good butterfly watching all,
DM
