Collection of dead, discoloured WLTs for research - 2020
Cape Town City authorities are keen to use all unusually-marked dead toads to research this recent abnormality.
We can directly help their efforts! Please also take 2 photos of any live, discoloured toads before releasing them: save the back photo as 1st default ‘signature’ pic, with tummy as 2nd pic – and wash your hands.
Notes for collecting dead toads:-
1 Please have two spray bottles (soapy water and water), a few ziplock bags, spatula, permanent marker pen and extra bucket/ice cream box.
2 [Any toad found dead without a known cause (not run over) should be placed directly into a ziplock bag without using any equipment and full medical protocols followed.]
3 Roadkill provides specimens, so check each one and take a photo (if safe) in the road. Do not put toad on the grid, but place the grid/coin/ruler nearby (no contamination).
4 Using a spatula, remove toad to verge, and take a photo of the back if 1st was of the tummy. Photos of the back are always the default/1st photo in any observation.
5 If the underside is discoloured or has blotches, please photograph this as the 2nd photo.
6 Input all details onto WLT project. If discoloured add into Notes with Bag [number]. Save onto iNat.
(No need to add into Roadkill project when busy in the field.)
7 Place in ziplock bag using spatula and write Bag [number] with a marker. Put into your extra box.
8 Wash the spatula and your hands, so you feel clean and can’t transfer anything to another toad.
9 When home, please complete following info on ziplock bag:
- Your user name and Bag [number].
- Male/Female WLT with discolouration
- Date
- Street and house number, if poss
- the iNat url number from your uploaded obs, it’s the accession number needed for easy ref.
10 Place the securely fastened bag into well-marked ice cream box and place in bottom of your freezer (or hand to me). Inform me if you have any by end Sunday 23rd August so that we can coordinate drop off/collection when the City confirms arrangements.
