Field Notes - This little crab surprised me as I fished off the rocks...it attempted to grab hold of my foot through the holes on my Crocs!
Observation and photographs provided by Jenni Wrysta. Sequence shows the bottlenose dolphin "Star" tossing a fish/eel that she captured in the Port River. Subject of this sighting record is the fish/eel pictured.
Seeking help with ID please. Found in Sargassum sample, at 3m deep. Scale in image is 5mm, so specimen was less than 1cm long. Khaki green, lumpy test with bright red pigment around the edges of the siphons. Thanks for your help.
Field Notes - He was about 20cm from tip to tip and was just resting in the sand around the rocks. Photographed in the afternoon yesterday
Image by Chris Wells,a resident in my Local Government Area. Thanks kindly Christopher for your willing consent for me to post your photo on iNat (as we discussed today)
Chris found this shark dead on the beach at Lady Bay on ~19/08/2018(or only a day or so before he took this photograph). Chris measured it at 2 metres in length. It is the largest wobbegong shark he has ever found (all as beach washed dead specimens) in Yankalilla Bay (which includes Normanville Beach, Lady Bay Beach, and Shelly Beach aka Little Gorge Creek Beach).Chris has had a lifelong connection with the area, and with Lady Bay in particular, and is in my age group. So this is the biggest wobbegong (or related 'carpetsharks' or 'catsharks' bearing any resemblance) he's seen @ or near Lady Bay for ~6 decades. He and another family member then buried it (in the upper beach region,I think) because the decomposing carcass was beginning to emit a very unpleasant smell, sufficient to upset local residents.
[NB:Although I forgot to ask Chris if he had any opinion as to cause of the shark's death, I can see nothing in the photo that helps me form an opinion either, in that regard]
Not much left on Monday, but have seen some excellent photos from Sunday.
Eggs found in an old aluminium can filled with seaweed fragments.
After about 1 minute exposure, the juveniles started exiting (dropping out) of the eggs - image #2.
Juveniles were released into a protected pool - image #3.
Lovely stuff...I was going to put Botrolloides in the ID but it' not available yet, and as I am no expert on these I'll leave it to those that know more hopefully!
