Rare. In damp coastal shrubland. I think this is a new record for Banks Peninsula. It is easily distinguished from the only other Hierochloe (Anthoxanthum) on the peninsula, A. redolens, by the awn on the male lemma being attached near the lemma apex rather than 3-4mm above base of lemma, as in A. redolens. All other features match A. fuscum well, including the habitat, which is in damp coastal shrubland with Taupata, Phormium tenax, Blechnum blechnoides, Festuca actae, Asplenium obtusatum and Carex trifida. Not forming large clumps like A. redolens, more sparse tufts scattered through low scrub.

Battered specimen rescued from cat who had retrieved it from parapara (Pisonia brunoniana) tree where it had been gummed up in the ripe fruits. I assume it would die but this bird tolerated being ungummed, and carefully washed and dried. It was then fed a supply of midges and Scolypopa australis, and given water. The following morning this bird was successfully released and despite missing all it's tail feathers it seemed fine. Never dealt with such a delicate bird before, I was convinced it would die. Obviously more resilient than I had thought

Thallus cyanobacterial, lobate, lobe margins orbicular centrally appressed, apically ascending. When fresh dark charcoal black to reddish-brown, drying grey, mostly smooth but in places wrinkled toward lobe margins; margins sparsely phyllidiate; phyllidia terete, up to 0.6 mm long; lower surface dark brown to red-brown, matt, glabrous. Apothecia frequent reniform, up to 10 mm diameter, disc red-brown.

Corticolous near the base of a mahoe-wao (Melicytus lanceolatus). Thallus admixed with Thuidium laeviusculum. Voucher lodged in UNITEC (PdL 12877 & D.J. Blanchon) with duplicate sent to Prof. Bernard Goffinet (University of Connecticut) for DNA sequencing as part of worldwide study of Nephroma.

Seems to fit this species as it is described by Galloway (1985: Flora of New Zealand Lichens p. 315-316) but apothecia too big.

Undescribed species currently included within the tag name Cardamine aff. corymbosa "scree race".

Once common in the Castle Hill Basin, this Cardamine, which probably has the largest flowers of the 50 or so New Zealand endemic species is rapidly heading to extinction due to increasing pressure from a raft of basicolous weeds that have spread from adjacent pasture, following a shift from sheep farming to dairy / cattle farming.

In the 1990s this race was abundant on limestone scree in this area, plants often forming 'balls' of foliage up to 120 mm diameter. Now we could only find a handful of plants.

The flowers of this race are very sweetly scented, and up to 10 mm diameter.

Unnamed species belonging to a race known widely as Cardamine aff. corymbosa "scree race". However, Castle Hill Basin limestone populations of this race may be something different again.

Formerly common, now threatened by invasive basicolous weeds, especially Agrostis cpaillaris, Festuca rubra subsp. commutata and Leucanthemum vulgare.

At this location five plants noted, growing on fine limestone "flour" and rendzina on an eroded slope between limestone outcrops.
